Wokingham Borough Council have officially opened the new and improved boardwalk at Winnersh Meadows this week.

The £35,000 project, funded by Winnersh Triangle, the business park owned by Frasers Property, will enable a better connection between the business park and the local community. Many people who work at Winnersh Triangle also live locally and it is hoped that by improving the pathways between the site and residential areas, it will be easier for people to walk or cycle to work, helping people to make healthier commuting choices.

The new boardwalk, constructed from recycled plastic, replaces the original that was designed and built in the 1990s but had to close a number of years ago due to wood rot.

“I am delighted to officially open this fantastic addition to Winnersh Meadows, the latest example of infrastructure we are putting in place to support more sustainable travel options across the borough,” said Cllr Parry Batth, executive member for environment and leisure, who officially opened the boardwalk.

“We are very grateful to Frasers Property for working in partnership with us and funding this important project that will benefit so many.”

Winnersh Meadows is also a popular place for wildlife, and the council’s grounds maintenance is carried out in the interest of biodiversity. With wetland areas, copse and thickets, and designated long grass meadow areas the council aims to support wildlife here including great crested newts.

Other features enjoyed by residents at the meadow include an outdoor gym, basketball hoop, kick about football goal and picnic areas, as well as a community orchard.
