south wokingham development

Work continues on the South Wokingham Distributor Road (SWDR), which once complete, will provide an alternative route from London Road to Finchampstead Road around Wokingham town centre.

The SWDR forms part of Wokingham’s Major Highways Programme, which aims to build vital new strategic roads and highways improvements to help facilitate growth in the borough and manage congestion. The council has committed substantial investment, secured from developers, in a wide range of infrastructure, comprising new schools, open spaces and leisure facilities, community facilities, as well as the major new roads, amounting to nearly £1billion investment.

The South Wokingham major development is an urban extension of Wokingham town, comprising Montague Park and south of the railway between Finchampstead Road and the boundary with Bracknell Forest.

The SWDR is being built primarily to serve the 2,500 new homes coming to the South Wokingham major development as well as to ease traffic. The first phase, William Heelas Way through Montague Park to the school, is completed. Once complete the new road will connect London Road and Waterloo Road, through to new junctions at Easthampstead Road and Finchampstead Road, connecting to the existing Tesco roundabout.

The council is progressing with the planning application process and detailed design work for all phases of the SWDR. The planning applications will be reviewed and considered by planning committee later this year.

Construction of the SWDR will commence once the land for the new road is made available to the Council by the landowners.
