Stay vigilant – rising Covid cases in Wokingham borough

Covid-19 infection rates are rising in Wokingham Borough, and are now above the national average for England and the South East.

In fact, the weekly case rate per 100,000 people currently sits at 32.7 in Wokingham Borough, 12.5 in the South East (on average) and 23.6 in England (on average).

Hospitalisations remain low, which underlines the success of the vaccination programme. However, data does tell us that you can still catch and spread the virus if you’ve been vaccinated. It is crucial that we work together to stop the numbers from rising further and follow all the guidelines to protect ourselves and others.

As your Conservative-led council, we are continuing with enhanced contact tracing so we can ensure residents are complying with self-isolation rules and stopping the spread of the virus. We are also working with our NHS partners to promote uptake of the vaccine and providing free rapid testing to all residents to check they aren’t infected.

Please help us by playing your part.

It is imperative that we keep going with all the right behaviours to contain the virus and slow rising infection rates in our communities. Cases are increasing across the borough and nationally despite the vaccine roll-out; so please remain cautious and remember to Test, Isolate and Vaccinate.

As we can see from worse-affected areas in other parts of England, people are still catching Covid-19 even if they’ve been vaccinated. This new variant is spreading fast, so we need to follow all the rules and best practice to protect ourselves and others.
